What is magic and esotericism: in simple words.

What is magic and esotericism, how do they differ, the main directions of magic, white and black magic, who is a mage and where does the path begin.

Magic and Esotericism — words everyone has heard, but few can explain without loud promises or, conversely, mockery. Let’s try calmly and honestly: what magic is, how it differs from esotericism and religion, what directions exist, and where the path of a mage begins.

✎ In my system of the universe everything is simple. Religions are an external filter and at the same time garbage on the path to knowledge of the higher essence, because everything in this world moves along the vector of infinite cycles having only one meaning — to pull you out of the “shell” of consciousness.

In our world there is a conditional hierarchy determined by the assembly point of consciousness. And when we talk about the difference between esotericism and magic, the essence is as follows:

Esotericism is a system of human conjectures about the structure of the universe, built on inaccurate, unconfirmed data, astrological schemes without rigorous verification, and, most importantly, on the intuition of people who do not have a stable connection with themselves, do not trust their own perception, and do not receive a real response from the world.

It remains a realm of assumptions: a person describes the structure of the universe as it seems to them, having confirmation neither from within nor from without.

Magic in this sense is the opposite. It is the receipt of direct confirmation from the structure of the universe itself: through an inner response that coincides with external anchors on the planet (places of power, cycles, material and event-based echoes). Here there is no guesswork — there is correspondence between what happens inside and what answers from outside.

Esotericism (from the Greek “inner”) is a collection of teachings about the hidden side of the world and of the human being, knowledge that historically was transmitted not to everyone, but to a narrow circle of the prepared. This includes astrology, numerology, tarot, alchemy, hermeticism, Kabbalah, teachings about subtle bodies, and much else.

Esotericism is first and foremost knowledge and a way of looking at the world. A person can study esotericism all their life and never once perform a single ritual.

What magic is

Magic is practice: purposeful influence on reality through will, attention, symbol, and ritual. If esotericism answers the question “how is the world arranged,” then magic answers the question “what can I change in it.”

The classic definition by Aleister Crowley sounds like this: magic is the science and art of causing change in conformity with will. In this definition there are neither robes nor candles — only will and the ability to direct it.

Main directions of magic

  • Ceremonial magic — strict ritual systems of the Western tradition: hermeticism, the Golden Dawn, Thelema.

  • Chaos magic — a practical direction that returns us to the origins of the creation of the world and the entire system of the universe and gives an understanding that we are the embodiment of the whole universe. Touching practically all teachings and traditions that existed earlier on earth and those of the present. For the realization of oneself and the essence of the universes. More details — in the article “Chaos Magic for Beginners.”

  • Necromancy — work with ancestors, the world of the dead, and the forces of transition.

  • Folk magic — spells, amulets, rites that have come down through generations.

  • Protective and cleansing magic — removal of negative influences, cleansings, building protection.

  • Mantic practices — tarot, runes, astrology, numerology: not influence, but the obtaining of knowledge.

“White” and “black” magic: is there a difference

The division into white and black magic is more everyday than professional. Force itself is neutral, like fire: it can warm a house or burn it. What matters are the goal, the method, and the mage’s responsibility for the consequences. Therefore serious practitioners speak not of “color,” but of ethics and of the price paid by the one who interferes in someone else’s fate.

✎ Everything depends on your destructive and constructive attitudes in your head. As you name the ship — so it will sail!

Who is a mage

A mage is not the one who bought a deck and candles, and not the one who “was born with a gift” and does nothing else. A mage is a person who:

  • develops attention, will, and perception over years;

  • knows the laws and rules of their system;

  • understands the price of interference and does not promise the impossible;

  • bears responsibility for their work and for the people who turn to them.

Where the path in magic begins

  1. Honest interest instead of the search for a miracle. Magic does not cancel reality — it works together with it.

  2. Basic discipline: concentration, breathing, regular practice, a system of knowledge.

  3. One system to begin with. Rushing between ten directions is the fastest way to master nothing.

  4. Protection and cleansing — before any serious influences.

  5. A mentor, when the first real results and questions appear that books do not answer.

Diagnostics of magical abilities will help you learn your inclinations and where it is better for you to begin. For those who are ready to go deeper — personal mentorship “Path of the Master.”

Frequent questions

Can any person engage in magic?

Basic practices can be learned by almost anyone. The depth and speed of the path depend on inclinations, discipline, and readiness to change. We all pay with rose-colored glasses before we see the world as it really is. That is the whole price of growth!

Is it a religion?

No. Magic is a practice; it can be combined with different worldviews. Some systems include work with deities, others do not.

Is magic dangerous?

Like any powerful means — if handled ineptly. That is why in serious schools one begins with protection, rules, and discipline.
